Giulio Granati, musician, composer and jazz pianist, born in Rome on 27.12.56 has always said “I paint what I cannot play”. His activity took him abroad at a very young age, where he moved permanently to Switzerland in 1978. He currently lives in Taverne, near Lugano.He began classical studies at the age of 6. During his adolescence he began exploring other musical forms, from pop to rock to jazz around 18 years. A great versatility allows him to live on music ranging in different contexts, from entertainment to concert hall to numerous collaborations with Swiss radio and television. In the early 1980s, he moved to Germany where he played jazz with several local musicians, calling the period “the best source of learning”.
His great passion, however, is composition. His music is permeated by classical influences, in particular the neoclassicism of the early 900, by Hispanic composers and, of course, jazz, as can be heard from the ten records made for the label Altrisuoni.
Among his most important compositions are the duets for piano and flute (dedicated to Albeniz), the “Dreams” for solo piano and the concert for jazz quartet and orchestra “Miles in the sky”, (also performed with the OSI conducted by Luca Pfaff in 2006 and the YOUTH ORCHESTRA of La Spezia conducted by Aurelio Canonici) in addition to many compositions for trio, quartet, quintet and sextet jazz.
There are also trios and string quartets.
From his last dicographic work with the sextet Musaik follows a long period of silence caused by unpleasant private events that deprive him of musical inspiration and takes refuge in painting but, finally, thanks to his long-time friend, drummer Francesco D’Auria, with whom he had already made a couple of records, the most recent encounter with double bass player Antonio Cervellino and the alchemy that is created between them, gives life to the new project “Dreams and other stories”published by the Swiss label Altrisuoni on 20.03.2023.
Self-taught painter considers painting as a means of expression complementary to music. He begins his journey by painting musical subjects and then begins an introspective journey that leads him to the current works in which the human being is the absolute protagonist, in his joys, his anxieties and his conflicts. The images often appear as if wrapped in a slight veil of fog, not clear and clear, to signify the relativity of what appears to us, the absence of absolute certainties.

Intraprende gli studi classici all’età di 6 anni.
Durante l’adolescenza inizia l’esplorazione di altre forme musicali, dal pop al rock fino ad arrivare al jazz intorno ai 18 anni.
Una grande verstilità gli consente di vivere di musica spaziando in diversi contesti, dall’entertainment alla sala da concerto alle numerose collaborazioni con radio e televisione svizzera.
All’inizio degli anni 80 si trasferisce per un periodo in Germania dove suona solamente jazz con diversi musicisti locali, definendo tale periodo come “la migliore fonte d’apprendimento”.
La sua grande passione è però la composizione. La sua musica è permeata da influenze classiche, in particolare dal neoclassicismo dei primi del 900, dai compositori ispanici e, naturalmente, dal jazz, come si può ascoltare dalla decina di dischi realizzati per l’etichetta Altrisuoni.
Tra le sue composizioni più importanti ricordiamo i duetti per pianoforte e flauto (dedicati ad Albeniz), i “Dreams” per piano solo e il concerto per quartetto jazz e orchestra “Miles in the sky”, (eseguito anche con l’OSI diretta da Luca Pfaff nel 2006 e dalla YOUTH ORCHESTRA di La Spezia diretta da Aurelio Canonici) oltre alle moltissime composizioni per trio, quartetto, quintetto e sestetto jazz.
Numerosi anche i trii e quartetti per archi.
Dal suo ultimo lavoro dicografico con il sestetto Musaik segue un lungo periodo di silenzio causato da spiacevoli vicende private che lo privano dell’ispirazione musicale e si rifugia nella pittura ma, finalmente, grazie al ritrovato amico di lunga data, il batterista Francesco D’Auria, con il quale aveva già realizzato un paio di dischi, il più recente incontro col contrabbassista Antonio Cervellino e l’alchimia che si crea tra loro, da vita al nuovo progetto “Dreams and other stories”, pubblicato dall’etichetta svizzera Altrisuoni il 20.03.2023.
Pittore autodidatta considera la pittura come mezzo di espressione complementare alla musica. Inizia il suo percorso dipingendo soggetti a carattere musicale per poi iniziare un percorso introspettivo che lo porta ai lavori attuali in cui l’essere umano è protagonista assoluto, nelle sue gioie, le sue angosce e i suoi conflitti. Le immagini appaiono spesso come avvolte da un leggero velo di nebbia, non chiare e nitide, a significare la relatività di ciò che ci appare, l’assenza di certezze assolute.
